چکیده

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare zinc level in children with gastroenteritis compared to children without gastroenteritis.
Methods and materials: In this case control study children with acute gastroenteritis and age and sex matched control group without gastroenteritis were included. Eighty children with acute gastroenteritis and 80 children without gastroenteritis were included. Control group were selected from patients whose admitted in pediatric surgery ward for minor surgery. Case and control group were matched regarding age and sex. Inclusion criteria for control group were as the following: onset of diarrhea was less than 48 hours, age more than 6 months till 12 years old, and clinical manifestation of diarrhea. Evidence of chronic disease, zinc supplement during 3 months prior to hospitalization, and duration of diarrhea more than 7 days were considered as the criteria for the exclusion. This study was approved by ethical committee of the university.
Results: Of 160 participants ( 80 case and 80 control), 89(55.6%) were male and 71(44.4%) were female. Mean age of the participants were 3.35±2.21 years (aged 1- 10 years). There was no difference between case and control in terms of age and sex. Mean zinc level was significantly lower in cases (72.76±26.39) than control (91.15±17.76). Zinc level in children aged < 5 years was significantly less in case group compared to the control group. While in children aged > 5 year, there was no significant difference(P=0.85).
Conclusion: Serum zinc level was significantly lower in children with gastroenteritis than children without.
