Background and ObjectivesMaintaining the patient's dignity is an important issue in the health care system and a fundamental value in nursing care. This study was therefore conducted to investigate nurses' commitment to respecting human dignity in nursing care. Subjects and MethodsThis cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2023 on 360 nurses employed in the teaching hospitals of Shahid Sadougi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd. Data collection utilized cluster sampling and employed a questionnaire, which encompassed demographic-social information and the Dignity in Care Scale for Nurses (DICSN). Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression in SPSS version 20 software. ResultsThe mean score of human dignity in nursing care was 135.99±18.08, and the mean score of all dimensions of the questionnaire was higher than the acceptable range. Among the dimensions, communication skills (42.84±6.04), confidentiality of patient information (24.2±3.93) and quick response to patient's needs (23.42±3.3) were in a more favorable condition. Also, the mean score of the questionnaire was higher in women (138.29±17.16) than in men (133.2±18.9) (p=0.02). According to the logistic regression model, women were more likely than men to have more appropriate behavior in respecting human dignity in nursing care. (OR=5.54, CI=2.14-14.34) (p<0.001). The results showed that with the increase in the education level correlated with a decrease in nurses' commitment to respecting patient dignity (p=0.01). ConclusionThe mean score for human dignity and for all dimensions of the questionnaire exceeded the acceptable range. To further enhance human dignity in nursing care, we suggest implementing effective training courses.
