Abstract

Abstract
Introduction: Popliteal vein repair and ligation are the two main approaches to the treatment of the venous component of trauma cases with vascular involvement.
We have studied the incidence of pulmonary embolism and Deep vein Thrombosis following these two methods in trauma cases and report the outcome.
Material and methods: From December 2017 to December 2018, 60 patients with popliteal vein injury in 2 groups
ere operated on in our vascular unit using ligation Popliteal vein(n=30) and saphenous vein interposition graft (n=30). All the patients underwent a colour Doppler sonography of the lower limbs to study DVT and pulmonary artery CT angiography
using to establish the incidence of pulmonary embolism. finally collective data were compared between 2 groups and
Results: Deep venous thrombosis occurred in 5(16.7%) patients of vein ligation group and 3(10%) patients of vein repair group. This difference wasn,t significant(p =o.61).
pulmonary embolism was seen in 2(6.7%) patients of vein ligation group and 8(26.7%) patients of vein repair group. This difference was significant(p =o.001).
incidence of injured limb amputation was 10% in vein ligation group vs 6.7% in vein repair group. This difference wasn,t significant(p=0.22).
There was no significant difference in incidence of wound infection between patients who underwent vein ligation and those who received vein repair(10% vs 6.7%, p=0.38).
