Abstract
Infective endocarditis is usually caused by bacteria that reach the heart valves through the bloodstream. This study examines the appearance of heart valves in patients with endocarditis and the correlation of these indicators and possible diagnoses made by the surgeon with the microbiology results of patients at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran. After examining 41 patients, 24 patients with infective endocarditis (28 valves) were evaluated. The results showed that the mean age of the patients was 40.96 years. The most common microorganism causing endocarditis in this study was Staphylococcus aureus. In 7 cases (25%) the tricuspid valve was involved, which was the most common valve involved in the patients. The type of valve involved did not have a significant relationship with blood culture results (P-value = 0.79), but cord rupture was more common in patients with Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis (66.7%). In this study, the most common complication in patients with endocarditis was valve perforation, with 22 cases. The size of the vegetations was large in all patients. Overall, the results of this study indicate that physical indicators of heart valves such as chordal rupture, valve perforation, and the number and size of vegetations were associated with staphylococcal endocarditis. According to the results of this study, it is recommended that surgeons pay attention to the physical indicators of heart valves during cardiac surgery in patients with endocarditis. These indicators may be helpful in diagnosing the type of bacteria causing endocarditis and choosing the appropriate treatment.
