The effect of resistance training with elastic bands combined with the consumption of an anti-inflammatory herbal compound on C-reactive protein levels and premenstrual syndrome symptoms in girls with PMS

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is associated with unpleasant physical, psychological, and behavioral changes, and evidence suggests that systemic inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to its symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the effect of resistance training with elastic bands combined with an anti-inflammatory herbal compound on C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and PMS symptoms in girls with PMS.
Methods: In this double-blind, semi-experimental study, twenty-four young women with PMS living in Kerman were randomly assigned to three groups: training–placebo, training–supplement (500 mg), and training–supplement (1500 mg). The intervention included resistance training with elastic bands and consumption of the herbal supplement during two menstrual cycles. Blood assessments and PMS symptoms (using the PMS-Q questionnaire) were performed one day before the onset of menstruation and repeated after two menstrual cycles.
Results: After the intervention, CRP levels and PMS symptom scores significantly decreased in all three groups (P < 0.001). The reduction in CRP in the low-dose supplement group was significant compared with the training–placebo group (P = 0.012). Additionally, the reduction in PMS symptom scores in both the low-dose (P = 0.015) and high-dose (P < 0.001) supplement groups was significant compared with the placebo group (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that combining elastic-band resistance training with an anti-inflammatory herbal supplement can effectively reduce the severity of PMS symptoms and CRP levels. A low dose of the herbal supplement appears sufficient and effective, and increasing the dose does not necessarily enhance the anti-inflammatory benefits.
