Abstract

Background and Objective: Hospitals are one of the most important and costly units in health system which take a major share of GDP. Therefore the efficiency is very important in hospitals. The aim of this study was to compare productivity between university and non-university hospitals Using MALEMQUIST`S Index and DEA in Ahvaz.
Subjects and Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was conducted during five years from 2005-2009 in 16 hospitals of Ahvaz. The inputs include the number of physicians, number of nurses, number of other personnel and number of active beds. The outputs include the bed occupancy rate, number of patients and number of operations. Data collection tool was a researcher-designed checklist. Data were analyzed by software Windeap 2.1 and SPSS 16.0 using Mann-Whitney test.
Results: The average overall productivity factor of all thehospitals within 5 years was 0.983. The averages of technical and technological efficiency of the all hospitals during the study period were 1.002 and 0.981 respectively. Average productivity factor of university hospitals was 0.940 and for non-university hospitals was 1.03 (P<0/05).
Conclusion: The technological efficiency has an important role in total productivity factor. The overall productivity in university hospitals was significantly better than non-university hospitals.
