Abstract

Background and Objective: Cardiac catheterization is one of the most important procedures in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disorders. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of acute complications associated with cardiac catheterization in children with congenital heart disease.
Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was done on 304 patients with congenital heart diseases underwent cardiac catheterization in Golestan hospital, Ahvaz, Iran during 2012-13. Data were collected from patients’ cardiac catheterization information report sheets and retrieved information was analyzed using statistical T test and SPSS software, version 17.
Results: Enrolled cases had a mean age of 4.37±5.10 yr and a mean weight of 14.98 ±12.32 Kg (male 48.7% and 51.3% female). 93.8% of the cases had diagnostic catheterization and 6.2% had interventional catheterization. The most common adverse effects associated with vascular complications occurred in 7 cases (2.3%) and arrhythmia in 12 cases (3.9%). Fever after catheterization occurred in 28 patients (9.2%).
Conclusion: Although angiography and cardiac catheterization is an invasive modality in diagnosis and treatment in children with congenital heart disease, it can be performed safety in children by expert physicians and better equipment.
