Comparision of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and use of Defense Mechanisms Scores among Burn Ward Nurses and Employees of Fire Brigade in Ahvaz, Iran

Abstract

Background and Objective: The type of occupation can be one of the major causes of stress in the lives of people. Nurses working in burn units and firebrigade staff are the first teams who are encounter persons experiencing accidental injuries and thus are vulnerable to post-traumatic stress Disorder (PTSD). Since the occurrence of the cases referred to in Ahvaz has not been examined in the present study was to determine the rate.
Subjects and Methods: The analytical epidemiological study, 60 nurses and fire brigade staff (with least 1 year of work experience). Data collection was based on completion of PTSD (Mississippi) and defense mechanisms questionnaire (DSQ-40).
Results: Theaverage score of posttraumatic stress for nurses was 43.63 and for firefighters crew 34.19 (P<0.05). In addition, the average score of use of defense mechanisms were significantly higher among firefighters (P<0.03) than burn units nurses (222.18 v. 196.23).
Conclusion: Fire staff nurses to earn higher scores on the use of defense mechanisms-which means they staff nurses 18/222 and 23/196, which is also statistically significant difference in the numbers. The use of defense mechanism is carried out in staff.
