Abstract
Back ground and aim: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disorder that leads to tissue damage and bone loss as a result of complex interactions between pathologic bacteria and ُthe host s immune response. In recent years, more attention has been focused on the role of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant systems in the pathology of periodontitis. The aim of this study was to find relation of the salivary total antioxidant levels and periodontal disease.
Methods and Materials: This case control study was performed on 45 persons who 15 patients with periodontitis , 15 patients with gingivitis and 15 persons with healthy periodontium that were patients in Ahwaz Dental School in 1390-1391. The levels of salivary total antioxidant were assayed using by Spectrophotometry method.
Results: Control group had significantly higher salivary total antioxidant level compared to patients with gingivitis and periodontitis(p<0.001).. The difference between salivary total antioxidant level in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis was not significant (P>0.05).
Conclusion : This study showed decreasing of total salivary antioxidant level in periodontal patients compare to control group.
