Abstract

Background and Objectives: Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease and is the leading cause of death worldwide. Platelet hyperactivity and activation has been suggested to play a causal role in acute coronary events.
Automated cell counters have made the platelet count and platelet volume indices routinely available in most clinical laboratories and can reflect changes in either the level of platelet stimulation or the rate of platelet production. So, our aim was to evaluate platelet parameters in ischemic heart disease spectrum and to attempt a clinicopathological correlation.
Subjects and Methods: A hospital based study was carried out on 201 patients who had nderwent coronary angiography. Three groups were studied: stable angina, unstable angina and myocardial infarction. Platelet indices were measured in each group and analyzed based on CAD extension with two method(eye ball and syntax score) in subgroups.
Results: Average age of precipitants was 57 years. Sixty five percent of them were male. Average MPV and PDW were higher in study groups than control(p=0.04 ,p=0.03).
PDW had positive correlation with CAD extension in infarction group(p=0.04);also, diabetes had significant confounding effect on PDW(p=0.01).
Conclusion: In our study, PDW was correlated to CAD extension. But there was no relationship between CAD and other indices.
