The imbalances between   the levels of free radical and antioxidants may play an important role in the onset and development of several inflammatory oral pathologies such as Lichen Planus. Melatonin as an antioxidant can play a role in scavenging free radicals and prevent OLP conversion to cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate melatonin level in patients with OLP. Subjects and Methods: In this analytical studytwenty two patients diagnosed with OLP, were recruited as patients group, and twenty age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were recruited as control group. Melatonin levels in whole unstimulate saliva (WUS) was determined by ELISA test. Statistically analyzed was carried out with LSD and Duncan test. Result: The mean saliva melatonin levels in patients with OLP was lower than those of healthy control group, but it was not statistically significant (P=0.3). The mean saliva melatonin levels in patients with reticular type of OLP compared with control group was significantly decreased (P<0.05) but in  erythematose/ulcerative type was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that the level of melatonin was decreased in patients with Licben planus, and supports the notion that more attention to treatment of this much neglected disease need to be made. These findings also suggest that the low level of this antioxidant may lead to more destructive injury and put the patients at risk of development of oral cancer..    }, keywords = {Lichen Planus,Melatonin,free radicals,Anti Oxidants}, title_fa = {بررسی میزان ملاتونین در بزاق بیماران مبتلا به لیکن‌پلان دهانی مراجعه‌کننده به دانشکدۀ دندان‌پزشکی جندی‌شاپور اهواز در سال 1390-91}, abstract_fa = {زمینه و هدف: لیکنپلان دهانی یک بیماری مزمن و پیش بدخیم است. عدم تعادل بین رادیکالهای آزاد و آنتی اکسیدانتها سبب شروع و گسترش برخی بیماریهای التهابی از جمله لیکنپلان میشود. ملاتونین بهعنوان یک آنتی اکسیدانت و با پاکسازی رادیکالهای آزاد میتواند از تبدیل لیکنپلان به سرطان جلوگیری کند. لذا هدف از این مطالعه، بررسی تغییرات میزان ملاتونین در بزاق این بیماران است. روش بررسی: در این مطالعۀ اپیدمیولوژیک تحلیلی، 22 بیمار دارای لیکنپلان برای گروه بیمار و همچنین 20 نفر داوطلب سالم که از نظر سن و جنس با گروه بیمار مطابقت داشتند بهعنوان گروه کنترل انتخاب شدند. سطح ملاتونین در بزاق کامل غیر تحریکی به روش تستELISA  و آنالیز آماری با استفاده از تست LSD و دانکن انجام گرفت. یافتهها: سطح ملاتونین در بزاق بیماران لیکنپلان نسبت به گروه کنترل کاهش یافته بود، اما در مقایسه با هم اختلاف معنادار نبود (3/0P=). سطح بزاقی ملاتونین در زیرگروه رتیکولر نسبت به گروه کنترل به شکل چشمگیری کاهش یافته بود (040/0P=)، اما در زیرگروه اریتماتوز - اروزیو اختلاف معنادار نبود (95/0P=). نتیجهگیری: بر اساس این مطالعه، میزان ملاتونین در بیماران لیکنپلان کمتر از گروه سالم بود و کاهش قابل توجه آن در لیکنپلان رتیکولر، لزوم توجه بیشتر به این فرم بیماری که همیشه اهمیت کمتری برای ما داشته است را بیان میکند؛ چرا که کاهش میزان ملاتونین بهعنوان یک عامل آنتی اکسیدانت میتواند بیانگر آسیبهای مخرب ناشی از رادیکالهای آزاد و حتی شاید قرار گرفتن سیر بیماری به سمت ایجاد بدخیمی در این نوع بیماری باشد.  }, keywords_fa = {لیکن‌پلان دهانی,ملاتونین,رادیکال‌ آزاد,آنتی‌اکسیدانت}, url = {https://jsmj.ajums.ac.ir/article_47191.html}, eprint = {https://jsmj.ajums.ac.ir/article_47191_84ce5bbe9b1053b0a4b1b5966bd47594.pdf} }
